Haitian Relief Effort

The Loose Bead Society assisted Bartolotta Restaurants to make "Haiti" bracelets as part of a promotion in their restaurants to raise $50,000-$75,000 in relief money for this devastated nation.

There were two Bead-a-Thons at the end of January and the beginning of February at Bacchus in Milwaukee. They were both great successes, with a big turnout of high-schoolers and other volunteers who made bracelets in 4 different patterns plus a "bead soup" style and a number of very creative "miscellaneous" bracelets. There were camera crews there from at least 3 local TV stations at the first Bead-a-Thon (Click here for TMJ4's article and video), and the event was featured on the evening news that night. In addition, a number of our members worked at home spinning and assembling "bead soup" bracelets.

The goal was to make 5,000 bracelets. After all was said and done, the final total was 5,400 bracelets, and 23 volunteers from the Loose Bead Society worked 387.5 hours! We appreciate everyone's efforts and enthusiasm for this worthy cause. An amazing job was done by everyone!

Of course, we took pictures! More pictures are available at Zanmi-Milwaukee, a new blog about events, organizations, and people that are making a difference in the city of Milwaukee.

Please click here for the official press release with full details, and feel free to visit the Bartolotta restaurants to purchase bracelets, the special traditional Haitian dessert, or the Haitian insipired drink! 100% of the proceeds will go to The United States Foundation for the Children of Haiti. From their website you can make a direct donation online.

Also, check out the Bartolotta Restaurants Care-a-Lotta site for how they continually help our community.
