Loose Bead Society of Greater Milwaukee
Membership Meeting- February 18, 2008
7:00 p.m. - New Berlin Public Library
President Rhonda Kutz is out with back
surgery so Vice President Suzanne Leberman ran the meeting.
Vice President Special Events’ Report:
-
Suzanne reminded everyone that the deadlines for the bead retreat are
coming up. Registration is due no
later than March 1st; this is a firm deadline with no exceptions. The
Radisson hotel has a deadline for room reservations of February 28th.
Retreat flyers were on the membership table and are on the website.
-
The Milwaukee Bead Sale is this Sunday; February 24th.
It’s from 10-4 at the Wyndham Hotel on Layton and Howell Avenue.
We need volunteers to run the LBS table; bring your beadwork, demo if you
want, talk up the society and have fun. Suzanne
passed a clipboard around the room for people to sign up.
-
A reminder that LBS members get the $25 registration fee for the Bead and
Button show waived by Kalmbach. If
you were charged or didn’t know of this, call Kalmbach and they will refund
you if you have paid your 2008 LBS dues.
Secretary’s report:
-
Debbie reminded members that samples for the classes offered at the
retreat are on display on the membership table.
Membership report:
-
Julie said we currently have 74 members and had 5 guests this evening.
She had bookmarks on the membership table with this year’s meeting dates on
them free for the taking.
Treasurer’s report:
-
Ann reported that the LBS account stood at $1,968 as of the end of
January.
Vice President- Programming report:
-
Renee indicated that the programming committee members will be sharing
the duties of speaking to the membership at the meetings each month from now on.
The committee has the following programs planned for the near future:
-
March we will have goldsmith
Chris Jensen demonstrate the art of piercing metal to make jewelry.
Members will be able to try this technique at the meeting as well.
-
April will be a month to learn about some of the stitches that can be
used in beadwork. There will be
five presenters at various tables demonstrating the stitches and showing off
examples of how to them.
-
May will be a group activity called “Bead Soup”; there will be 6
tables for small groups to create sets of jewelry with original fused glass
focal beads as inspiration. These
sets will be raffled off at the Bead and Button show and possibly be sold at our
December Silent Auction where proceeds go to a charity.
Newsletter:
-
Cindy is taking submissions for the next newsletter this week and hopes
to have it out the first week of March. Please consider, now or at any time, contributing an article
of interest to the newsletter for all to share.
Reviews on classes, books, tools, websites and anything bead related are
welcome at any time.
Member Lynn Larkins shared her good fortune
with the membership; one of her metal clay pieces is featured in a new book on
beadwork. Congratulations, Lynn!
It should be noted that we experienced a
temporary shutdown of our website last month due to some glitches when the host
provider changed platforms. All is back up at this point; thank you for your
patience during the time of interruption.
Ann Cook presented a detailed and
informative program on “To Sell or Not to Sell”; the ins and outs of
starting and running a small business. Thank you, Ann, for a wealth of
information. 30 members attended
tonight’s meeting.
Respectfully submitted,
Debbie Bednarek
